Butter cookies are one of the classic Christmas cookies that everyone likes. This homemade version is far better than what you will find in cans at the store during the holidays and the addition of this decadent chocolate takes them to an entirely new delicious level.

Ingredient
  • 2 - 4 teaspoons milk
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 2 cups (283g) of all-purpose flour (spoon and level for measuring)
  • Chocolate or melted candy, optional (see note)
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cups (140g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 


Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In an electric bowl mixer bowl, combined with rowing cream cream with butter, sugar, and salt until mixed.
  3. Mix egg yolks and vanilla.
  4. Add flour and mix until crushed then add 2 teaspoons of milk, if necessary add 1-2 teaspoons of milk again for more consistency that can be flattened with a pipe - add as little as possible for a smaller spread.
  5. Transfer to a 16 inch pipe bag equipped with a large open star tip (I like the Ateco 826 or 827 here, a smaller tip will not work well for thinning this thick dough).
  6. Pipe the dough into several rounds to two pan without the skin (if you usually have problems with the cake spread, chill for 30 minutes on a baking sheet before baking).
  7. Bake one sheet at a time in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 12 - 16 minutes.
  8. Let it cool on a baking sheet 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack until it has cooled completely. Store in an airtight container.
